It seems that any midwingman who gets a name is either promoted or injured/killed within a chapter. Makes it very hard to pin a number on the total crew - which is looking like 40, plus 20 groundcrew.

Ok, battle of Dover gives us that there were 5 topmen under Lieutenant Johns. I'm thinking that Ferris was actually John's replacement, and that they serve in the same position. I'll need to re-check when Ferris is introduced. The presense of Lieutenant Baylesworth with the Bellmen pokes a hole in this theory though. Thistledown 15:05, 29 September 2009 (PDT)

When Temeraire is first given crew, it is said that the armourer and leatherworker, and mayber the gunner, each had mates, and then 2nd mates. Do we have any idea if these 2nd mates stayed on after Loch Laggan?Thistledown 15:07, 29 September 2009 (PDT)
